We run Harvest Mouse photo workshops and courses throughout the year photographing these delightful little characters under controlled lighting conditions in an indoor setting which means no worrying about the weather as well as knowing that you will be able to use low ISO’s for the highest quality images. All our courses are run by an experienced professional photographer to offer advice, or give any help that may be required during the day with settings and techniques so you can concentrate on getting some beautiful photos.
Harvest Mice are the only UK mammal to have a prehensile tail which they use to hold on to plant stems as they climb and move around as well as being the smallest mammal found in the UK. They are also VERY photogenic with a huge “cuteness” factor!
Generally your day starts with everyone meeting up over a cup of coffee and a quick safety talk before moving on to the mice. The group leader will give you the settings that you need to use, for example the ISO, aperture and shutter speeds as well as the correct white balance, before helping you fine tune your camera and lens to get the best out of the day. Once the technical side has been taken care of the lighting will remain constant so you can concentrate on the mice without having to worry about the exposure side of things.
During the session various props will be used – we supply the basics such as wheat stalks, teasel, poppy heads etc but feel free to bring additional items such as flowers, brambles and berries, leafy sticks … any thing you might want to photograph a mouse on! It’s your day and we will try to accommodate your wishes so long as it is safe for you, us and most importantly the mice!
Ideally you will be using a DSLR camera (or a high-end CSC or Bridge Camera) which can be set to manual exposure and that has a standard flash “hot-shoe” fitting on it. Ideal lenses would be a macro lens around 100mm focal length or a zoom in the 70 – 300mm range. You can get very close to the mice if you wish to so there are plenty of opportunities for a variety of shots. Soft controlled lighting ensure the highest possible exposure quality that your camera and lenses can manage as well as very fast lighting to help minimise any camera (or whisker!) shake for clear sharp pictures.
Our sessions last about 2.5 hours giving you plenty of time to take a lot of photos! – Come and see us!
